The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (with the assistance of some researchers and medical doctors) issued an Obstetric Care Consensus statement: Safe Prevention of the Primary Cesarean Delivery this week!

The statement is a bit longer than this blog but definitely worth the read. Ideally, this statement will bring awareness to the field of obstetrics and gynecology in our country. If every person that has a career focused on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum (ObGyn, Doulas, Midwives, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Birth Educators, ETC) were to read this statement, I am positive we would start to see a shift in the positive direction in the way women are encouraged to give birth and the support offered to them during the biggest athletic event of their lives.

In a nutshell, our country performs an enormous amount of cesarean sections and interventions with no evidence of a decrease in maternal and/or neonatal morbidity or mortality. In 2011, ONE in THREE women gave birth via cesarean section.

This should RAISE SERIOUS CONCERNS.

The World Health Organization recommends that a country’s cesarean section rate be no higher than 10-15%! The United States is currently at 33%.

Yes, cesarean sections and medical interventions have their place and can definitely be life saving; however, just as it is mentioned in this statement, delivery methods and interventions need to be reassessed and redefined.

Education and being informed is just one aspect of being “BirthFIT”. We want you to know there is no right or wrong way to have your baby. However, we want you to know there are options. Read the statement, or at the very least, read the blog on Science and Sensibility that summarizes it quite nicely.  Consider this statement the pamphlet at the doctor’s office that you never got.

WORKOUT 

AMRAP 15 minutes:

15 OHS

15 Box Jumps or Step-ups (20-24″)

30 Front Squats

15 Box Jumps or Step-ups

45 Back Squats

15 Box Jumps

With the remaining time, do strict pull-ups or strict muscle-ups.

Notes and Modifications: 

  • Pick a weight for the entire workout that you could do 10-12 OHS in a row. You will use the same bar for the front squats and back squats.
  • The limiting factor when choosing a weight may be how much you can clean and/or how much you can overhead squat.
  • Box jumps or box step-ups or even lunges are fine.
  • Pull-ups and muscle-ups can be done with a slight kip, but try to do as strict as possible.
